Annie Huang
Faculty of Engineering
BEng(DS&E) 2026
Annie Huang (BEng(DS&E) 2026) moved to Hong Kong to pursue Data Science and Engineering, a path inspired by her passion for mathematical modelling competitions in high school and an eagerness to explore how data transforms various fields.
Though introverted when she first arrived at HKU, Annie soon recognised that growth happens outside your comfort zone. Taking the leap, she took on roles as an HKU Student Ambassador, a Lap-Chee College Ambassador, and Vice President of the Taiwanese Student Association. These leadership experiences honed her soft skills far beyond the classroom and played a defining role in her personal growth. Throughout this journey, she has also built countless friendships that will truly stay with her after graduation.

Most valuable lesson from your time at HKU?
I learned that everyone has their own path. In my first year, I was often afraid of trying something new because I constantly compared myself to others and felt that I wasn’t qualified to pursue certain opportunities. Over time, however, I realised that everyone moves at their own pace, and growth comes from taking the first step. Once I embraced that mindset, my HKU journey became much more exciting. ... HKU encouraged me to step outside my comfort zone and become a more outgoing person.
Through experiences such as student organisations, college life, and taking on leadership roles, I learned to embrace new challenges. Meeting friends from different countries and backgrounds also broadened my perspective and helped me grow more independent. Looking back, I feel like I have grown into the person I once aspired to become.

The most important thing I discovered about myself during my time at HKU is...
"Potential"
