Vivian Shih (BA 2026) grew up in Hong Kong with a deep-rooted passion for writing. From poetry and gothic fiction to debate scripts, she has always been fascinated by the profound power of language and art.
At HKU, Vivian doubled down on this passion by majoring in Art History and English Studies. Throughout her studies, she eagerly expanded her horizons by immersing herself in diverse cultures—undertaking an overseas internship in Singapore, an Art History field trip to Seoul, a leadership training program in Shanghai, and a study exchange in Melbourne.
When she isn‘t writing, Vivian can be found hunting down the best coriander dishes in the world or exploring art exhibitions with friends. Following graduation, she plans to channel her diverse experiences into developing creative projects that bridge community, culture, and the arts.
One moment that defines your HKU journey?
One of my most memorable experiences would be creating a theatre play from scratch with my friends. We spent weeks writing and devising our script, tinkering with props all around campus, and devoting much time to building a miniature theatre stage.
Taking inspiration from Wayang puppet theatre, we crafted a story for Hong Kong. Through my commitment to learning the skills of a puppeteer, I had a remarkable experience engaging with intangible cultural heritage. I cherish how we were able to innovate and invent through dramaturgy, transforming our academic knowledge into performing art.
By showcasing our play in front of peers and respected professors, I was inspired by the boundless possibilities of creativity built on knowledge and camaraderie.
What is your favourite spot on campus?
I love sitting by the benches outside the Main Building to unwind. The benches bear witness to numerous delightful conversations I’ve had with friends throughout the years. Also, it’s a great spot for squirrel and bird watching.
