Zhonglin Liu (BSc 2026), originally from Shandong, China, is graduating with a Bachelor of Science from the Faculty of Science, majoring in Mathematics with a second major in Economics. His studies focused on mathematical modelling, quantitative reasoning, and economic analysis. Beyond academics, he joined Lead for Life and the HKU Mentorship Programme, where he met inspiring mentors who encouraged him to think more broadly about his personal growth and future path. He also volunteers regularly with Mission For Migrant Workers, supporting community events, charity raffle sales, and health consultation services.
After graduation, Zhonglin will continue pursuing a PhD in Mathematics at HKU, focusing on risk management and financial systems. In the long run, he hopes his research can contribute to building a fairer, more stable, and more inclusive financial system.
Tell us how has HKU shaped you as a person
Since my first day at HKU, I have become much more willing to speak, listen, and engage with the world around me.
In my early years at university, I was not very fluent in English and often lacked the confidence to express my perspectives in discussions. I worried that my thoughts were not good enough, so I usually chose to stay quiet. But HKU’s open and collaborative environment gradually changed me. Through classes, group discussions, and interactions with peers, I learned to speak up, share my opinions, and appreciate different perspectives.
HKU also helped me move beyond the mindset that an undergraduate should only focus on coursework. Through Lead for Life and the HKU Mentorship Programme, I met kind and experienced mentors who shared their challenges and encouraged me to think more broadly about my path. A Lead for Life service project supporting migrant workers further opened my eyes to social inequalities and made me reflect on how my mathematical training could one day contribute to a better world.
